Real Life Activity Opportunities: Friends with Cerebral Palsy
Are you looking for something fun that you can do as a group with friends that have cerebral palsy, autism, or other developmental disabilities? Getting out into the world to explore and experience real life activity opportunities is essential for everyone of all ages. Sometimes just being a part of the group – whether you participate physically, verbally, or not at all – can make a big difference in someone’s life. All Friends Network was created to provide opportunities and programs for our members who want to make friends. We offer an online social network app that allows for interactive communication in a safe space designed for members only and real life activities designed to help build social skills and confidence for making friends with cerebral palsy, autism, and other developmental disabilities.
Fun Activities for Participants of All Ages
When thinking about real life activity opportunities that will allow everyone to participate in some way, shape, or form, it is essential to consider what everyone wants to do. However, even in small groups, it has been proven that it is impossible to please all of the people all of the time. Sometimes a new activity can be a great way to discover new interests that could have the potential to become hobbies and activities that the individual wants to pursue in the future. Attending planned activities for friends is a great way to enjoy social interaction with others while experiencing new things.
Some activities are designed for a certain age group. Young children have different interests than teenagers, and young adults may want something different as well. However, most everyone likes a pizza party or an outing to the local zoo or aquarium. These types of adventures do not usually require adaptations, accommodations, or modifications to be made for those with physical disabilities, as the ADA has already put in place the means for those with wheelchairs and other mobility devices to participate. All Friends Network is working with local event sites and opportunities to find activities designed for having new experiences and making friends with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities.
The Benefits of Real Life Activity Opportunities
Studies show that humans of all ages can benefit from participating in activities with other humans. If you share similar interests, have shared hobbies, or have experienced similar situations, such as having a developmental disability, the benefits can be even more significant. Developing new interests and participating in activities can be helpful for our mental health, encourage self-actualization, and can even foster a sense of accomplishment, especially when trying something new. This helps to promote a feeling of belonging and makes every future activity even more enjoyable. Practice makes perfect, especially when it comes to making friends, so the more you put yourself out there to meet new people, the easier it becomes.
The good news is that there are many event centers and activity services that have now looked for ways to make adjustments and modifications to ensure that their services are available to anyone. This includes people with varying abilities and special needs – not just to watch but to participate. When you contact these organizations to make plans for activities for friends, be sure to ask if they have accommodation options for those with disabilities and other types of special needs. There are even new venues that are now designed and built specifically with disabled accommodations in mind, including those who use wheelchairs, electric chairs, walkers, and other mobility equipment.
